IT IS ART. AND IT POURS TEA BEAUTIFULLY

One of my forays into painting came from the inability to explain why craft can be art. Functional craft is rarely considered in the same elevated stratus as other forms of art.

 Correct.

 It takes some real talent and understanding of form and function, chemistry,technique, style, firing and on and on to create this tea set. It is an accomplishment of a number of skill sets as well as creativity and originality. And yet, it is just a tea set after all. How can it be art?

I  no longer care to argue the case of craft versus art. All I can do is make beautiful objects which are permanent, one-of -a-kind, and artful. The obvious resolution is integral to my art and my craft. If I say so, it is. ART.

Observations from a Participant

OBSERVATIONS

I have always thought of myself as a participant in life. Never one to take to the sidelines, I declared myself to be in the midst of the huddle. Not really a quarterback but not sitting in the stands. My inspiration for this piece was the construct of relevance, of activity, of movement. But after decades of placing myself in the vortex of day to day business, I have come to appreciate the quiet observer. In the corner. Looking outward and inward simultaneously.The joy of others "doing" has meaning in my life now. Never a spectator until now; I am slow to appreciate the ability to "follow". Yes, being the centre of your own world is important to self recognition and growth, but at what point does that change?

The time for me to sit idly by and observe will come some day. Not today, but some day. In the interim, life offers the opportunity to participate and to watch, Both are integral to my happiness and fulfillment.I am mindful of the time passing quickly. It provides me the immense pleasure of  creating and viewing. Equally happy to paint  and to walk through the Tate Modern and view.

This painting is a good reminder of how wonderful it is to "see" and "be seen".

Subject Matter Matters- POPPIES MY WAY

I have blogged about flowers before but the subject still annoys me. How to paint them in a non-painterly way. Such a ubiquitous subject matter, flowers. Especially the poppy. The watercolourists suprema. The penultimate flower. Great colour, interesting form. And of course. It's not a rose.

Roses, another sore point for me.

So here we are, choosing to paint flowers again. Poppies that are not easily identifiable at first glance. Encaustic is a wonderful medium for my goal. Wax and paint will move the painting along without giving the whole story away. Happily, I am somewhere between impressionistic and abstract.  If  I would be so bold as to give advice on selecting subject matter for painting I would say, the subject matters and then it doesn't. Are you clear on that? Of course you are.
